FEMA: You may be eligible for flood assistance Providence Journal
WARWICK — The Federal Emergency Management Agency says many Rhode Islanders who were affected by the March storms and floods have not applied for benefits, even though they may be eligible.
“Disaster assistance is not charity,” the agency said in a news release. “This is federal taxpayer money set aside specifically for disaster assistance. The assistance one individual may receive will not take away from another applicant’s federal assistance funds.”
FEMA said also that those with insurance should register with the agency anyway, because insurance may not cover all losses.
FEMA has stationed workers at home-improvement outlets, such as Home Depot, Lowe’s and Sam’s Club, to advise property owners on their eligibility for federal assistance, according to FEMA spokeswoman Mary-Margaret Walker.
